The History of the Torrington Rotary Charitable Golf Tournament

Historically, the Torrington Rotary Club, like many other Rotary Clubs worldwide, raised money by having several fundraising events, flower and plant sales and small raffles. The amount of money raised was relatively small and the amount of effort was large in both time and organization. In 1988, two Torrington Rotarians, Carl Muller and John Logan discussed ways to raise more money and reduce the amount of work required. Since the discussion took place at a golf club, naturally, the idea of the Torrington Rotary Charitable Golf Tournament came into being.

The beginning years were fruitful and more money was raised than with other fundraising projects. The scope and prestige of the tournament started to grow from the first year and with the strong support of our major sponsor, American Airlines, the annual event has become one of Connecticut’s Premiere Golf Tournaments.

The present day tournament is always an early sell out. It features a splendid day of golf at the prestigious Torrington Country Club with a gourmet lunch and a dinner equal to that of any fine restaurant. The golfer "give-aways" are impressive, however, the finale for the day is the raffle that features over 60 prizes each worth in excess of $300. The tournament nets approximately $50,000 each year. All proceeds are given back to the community in various forms. Some of the money supports our scholarship program and other charitable work in the local communities and even International projects. Very soon, the total amount of money raised by this tournament will pass the One Million Dollar mark! To think this all began with two remarkable Rotarians who wanted to make a difference. They have made a difference, indeed.
